Solar Control Architectural Window Film

Modern Architecture sees light and bright designs enhancing the Australia lifestyle of merging indoor living with outdoor entertaining and leisure. What is often not considered is the need and cost associated with climate control in the extreme weather condition experienced in Victoria. From soaring heat in the summer to near freezing in the winter.

Applying Solar control window film to what is known as “thermal wounds” or windows will dramatically improve the effectiveness of your air conditioner, reducing your power consumption and that means lower electricity bills.

Many of our customers initially call to either increase their privacy or reduce the U.V. that fades their furniture and carpets. U.V.

that enters your home contributes up to 40% of the deterioration of your soft furnishings. The other contributing factors are heat, wear, age and internal lighting.

“Carbon Negative”

Solar control window film is one of the very few products that will save more carbon emissions “by reducing power consumption “that it takes to produce it. It looks good, assists with climate control and is now proven to be environmentally friendly.

Window Films

With thousands of architectural solar control window films available, it is a mine field for the consumer. With that in mind you can fairly well break all those window films it to three categories, reflective, non-reflective and neutral or as we prefer to call them (after great designs in architecture) Ionic, Doric and Corinthian.

Ultra Violet

Protection from harmful UV rays is another benefit of window film, good news for those concerned about sun exposure and melanomas. Single pane window glass blocks less than 25% of UV rays that damage the skin and fade furniture, carpets and curtains; while modern films can block as much as 99% of UV rays.

Fading

Fabrics, furnishings, artwork and floor coverings can be damaged and fade simply by allowing daylight to pass through an untreated window. By blocking more than 99% of all UV rays, Solar Cotrol Window films will help preserve the color of your fabrics, furnishings and floor coverings and help protect fine antiques, woods and works of art from discoloration and fading.

Infra red heat or infra red (IR) energy reduction

Energy (or light) from the sun is divided into three wavelength categories – ultraviolet, visible and infra red. All sunlight brings heat, so to properly calculate how much solar heat a window film can reduce, the sun’s whole spectrum must be considered.

Infra red from the sun brings about half the heat, the other half comes mainly in the visible light wavelengths and a small amount in UV.

To report only a film’s infra red reduction is therefore only telling part of the story. A particular window film may have an infra red reduction of say 90%, but the actual net heat rejection may be only 50%.

The true indication of heat reduction through glazing is the film’s Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER). This is calculated across all the sun’s wavelengths and even includes the portion of heat that is absorbed by the glass and re-radiated inwards. Any WFAANZ member promoting an infra red performance value must also declare the film’s TSER.

Solar Control Window Films

Ionic Window Film

Ionic films often have high reflectivity, offer a high heat rejection and best possible privacy. The most popular by far is known as Silver Reflective or mirror film. It is popular because of it superior solar energy rejection and is hugely beneficial to offices and factories who spend perhaps tens of thousands of dollars maintaining a comfortable climate for their staff.

In residential applications Ionic films are generally still reflective however the harsh silver finish is toned down to a softer appearance. This is perfect for tinting house windows.

Summer/Winter or Low Emissivity window films are becoming quite popular due to their exceptional value. Low Emissivity films are designed to deflect the energy back in the direction of its source. Unlike conventional Ionic films that are designed to reject the suns harmful rays, Low Emissivity films can also retain heat in the winter providing considerable insulation for your windows.

Considering that Victorians spend far more money on heating rather than cooling it is a worthwhile consideration for the prudent environmental consumer.

Doric Window Films

Popular due to their pleasing dark appearance, Doric window films are often sought by consumers trying to maintain an acceptable level of vision at night. Unlike the Ionic range that becomes very reflective internally at night, the Doric range is designed to be non-reflective. Although the solar energy rejection is a little lower, Doric window films can offer almost the same level of privacy. Most often black in appearance Doric films enhance the modem home with style and elegance.

Corinthian Window Films

Advancement in Nano and Ceramic technology has enabled manufacturers to develop Solar Control Window film that is almost impossible to see when applied to glass. Many clients include golf club and hotels who seek to maintain a good climate control while maintaining the view of the spectacular surrounds.

It is vital that you consult only experienced tradesmen who can advise you on the best possible solution and maximum protection for your home.

Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS)

The WERS for films program is owned and operated by Australian Window Association (AWA) in conjunction with Window Film Association of Australia and New Zealand (WFAANZ). The aim of the program is to simplify the technical and complex energy properties of glazing systems in to a star rating system that is universally adopted by Architects, Designers and Energy Assessors. The system is extended to include Solar Control Window Film. To qualify, the film must be independently tested and rated. The installer or consultant must be accredited by the WFAANZ and trained and accredited in the WERS program.
